Students Subject to the Requirement

Students who Need to Complete the Requirement

  1. First time in College (FTIC) students without an AA degree from a State of Florida University or Florida College System institution entering Fall 2018 or after.

OR

  1.  Students transferring to UF from an Out of State or Private Institution Fall 2018 or later.

OR

  1. Students who entered a State of Florida University System or Florida College System institution Fall 2018 or after and transferred to UF, and did NOT meet the requirement at the previous institution.

Note: The University of Florida has elected to include 2018 Summer B admits as part of the Fall 2018 cohort. Therefore, Summer B 2018 admits are included in the cohort to meet this requirement.

Options for Students to Meet the Civic Literacy Requirement

  1. Successfully passing either POSX041 American Government or AMHX020 Introductory Survey Since 1877. Each of the courses must include the following competencies:
    • Understanding of the basic principles and practices of American democracy and how they are applied in our republican form of government,
    • An understanding of the United States Constitution and its application,
    • Knowledge of the founding documents and how they have shaped the nature and functions of our institutions of self-government, and
    • An understanding of landmark Supreme Court cases, landmark legislation and landmark executive actions and their impact on law and society.

  2. Achieving the standard score on one of the following assessments:

NOTE: Dual enrollment courses taken prior to Fall 2018 do not satisfy the civic literacy requirement as those courses did not include the competencies required by statute until Fall 2018.

Board of Governors Definitions

FTIC

FTIC freshmen are defined as students who have earned a standard high school diploma from a Florida public or regionally accredited high school, or its equivalent, and who have earned fewer than twelve (12) semester hours of transferable college credit since receiving a standard high school diploma or its equivalent (Board of Governors Regulation 6.002).

  • High school students who earn dual enrollment credits (regardless of the number of credit hours earned) prior to high school graduation who then graduate from high school and are admitted to an SUS institution in Fall 2018 or later are considered FTIC and are subject to the civics literacy requirement.
  • High school students who have been admitted to an SUS institution as a degree-seeking student in Fall 2018 or later and who earn dual enrollment credits prior to graduating from high school are considered Early Admit FTIC and are subject to the civics literacy requirement.
  • High school graduates who earn less than twelve (12) credit hours of college coursework after graduating from high school are considered FTIC at SUS institutions and are subject to the civics literacy requirement.

Undergraduate Transfer Student

Undergraduate transfer students are defined as students who have earned twelve (12) or more semester hours of transferable college credit since receiving a standard high school diploma or its equivalent (BOG Regulation 6.004).
