French and Francophone Studies

The major enables students to achieve communicative competence in all four language skills: speaking, comprehension, reading and writing. Students will become knowledgeable in French and Francophone culture, literature and/or linguistics, and they will learn how to interpret French-language texts according to their cultural, literary and/or linguistic content.

Before Graduating Students Must

• Satisfactorily complete an assignment in a 4000-level course that includes the written analysis of a text (text and analysis in French) according to its cultural, literary and/or linguistic content, and an oral presentation and discussion conducted in French.
• Complete requirements for the baccalaureate degree, as determined by faculty.

Skills Students will Acquire in the Major (SLOs)

1. Demonstrate language competence in French; knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
2. Define and describe cultural correlates, literary production and/or linguistic structure of French.
3. Interpret French-language texts according to their cultural, literary and/or linguistic content.
4. Engage effectively in spoken and written French, including the ability to understand the spoken language, speak with correct grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
