  • SAT Subject Tests for Foreign Language Placement

    French
    SAT II Score Register for Notes
    350 & Below FRE 1130 Students with two years of high school French cannot take FRE 1130; they must take FRE 1134.
    360-490 FRE 1134 Successful completion of FRE 1134 satisfies the LAS language requirement.
    500-600 FRE 2220 LAS language requirement complete. Students can choose to continue study of French.
    610-690 FRE 2221 LAS language requirement complete. Students can choose to continue study of French.
    700 & Above 3000 level For placement in 3000-level courses, students should contact the undergraduate coordinator.
    A minimum score of 500 on the French SAT II subject test is required to meet the LAS language proficiency requirement.
    German
    SAT II Score Register for Notes
    480 & below GER 1125 or GER 1130  
    490-560 GER 1126 or GER 1131 Successful completion of GER 1126 or 1131 satisfies the LAS language requirement.
    570-690 GER 2200 LAS language requirement complete. Students can choose to continue study of German.
    700 & above 3000-level For placement in 3000-level courses, students should contact the department.
    A minimum score of 570 on the German SAT II is required to meet the LAS language proficiency requirement.
    Latin
    SAT II Score Register for Notes
    430 & below LAT 1120 Only for students with one year or less or no high school Latin.
    440-460 LAT 1121 Only for students with one or two years of high school Latin.
    470-530 LAT 1104 Only for students with two or three years of high school Latin. Students with four years cannot take LAT 1104; they must take LNW 2321 or 2560 or a 3000-level course. Successful completion of LAT 1104 satisfies the LAS language requirement.
    540 & above 2000 level LAS language requirement complete. Students can choose a 2000-level Latin course.
    A minimum score of 540 on the Latin SAT II is required to meet the LAS language proficiency requirement.
    Spanish

    Students with any prior study or knowledge of Spanish who wish to enroll in a Spanish course are required to take the WebCAPE online placement test, which is designed to help you determine the best course for you based on your background.

    Students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish in order to meet the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), College of Journalism and Communications (JM) or B.A. in Fine Arts (FA) degree requirements cannot do so using the WebCAPE online placement exam, they must take the SATII Spanish exam.

    SAT II Score Register for Notes
    ​0 - 340 ​SPN 1130
    350- 420 SPN 1131 Successful completion of SPN 1131 satisfies the LAS language requirement.
    430-560 SPN 2200 LAS language requirement complete. You may choose to continue study of Spanish.
    570-690 SPN 2201 LAS language requirement complete. Students can choose to continue study of Spanish.
    700 & above SPN 2240
    SPN 2340
    SPN 3300    		 For placement in these courses, students should contact the Spanish department.
    A minimum score of 430 on the Spanish SAT II is required to meet LAS language proficiency requirement.
