Stage Management

The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre is designed for students who want a liberal arts education with an emphasis in theatre. In addition to a broad liberal arts background, the BA provides the creative experiences of studio and performance work. Students are expected not only to master critical thinking about performance through courses such as theatre history, playwriting, and dramaturgy, but also to audition for productions or involve themselves in the creation of theatrical experiences on many levels.

The Bachelor of Arts provides broad career opportunities in several fields and an opportunity to minor in other subject areas. Examples of possible minors are English, business, or communications.

The School of Theatre + Dance provides an intimate setting where students, faculty, and staff interact in constant and close collaboration. Curricular programs are suited to a range of student interests and talents, from the liberal arts BA degree to the competitive BFA and MFA professional training degrees.

The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre | Stage Management is for students who want a liberal arts education with an emphasis in stage management for performing arts. In addition to a broad liberal arts background, the BA provides the student with creative and collaborative production experiences.

A minimum of 120 semester credits is required to complete the BA Theatre degree | Stage Management emphasis. An outside elective is any course taken outside of the major. Unless an approved minor is included, 18 credits of electives must be chosen from 3000/4000-level courses outside of the School of Theatre + Dance. Transfer students with AA degrees must complete additional courses in the basic distribution, which includes General Education requirements. Students must earn minimum grades of C in each of these courses and they may not be taken S/U.

Students must take 10 credits of foreign language or show a minimum proficiency in a single foreign language by taking a placement test. If the proficiency is met, it does not reduce the number of credits required for the degree. Foreign language may be taken S/U or for a letter grade, and the minimum grade is C; no credit is given through CLEP examinations.

All students pursuing the BA degree must consult the department advisor and get approval before attempting the elective portion of this program.

Critical Tracking records each student’s progress in courses that are required for entry to each major. Please note the critical-tracking requirements below on a per-semester basis.

Equivalent critical-tracking courses as determined by the State of Florida Common Course Prerequisites may be used for transfer students.

In addition to a broad liberal arts background, the BA Stage Management specialization provides opportunities on theatre and dance productions. Students are expected to master critical thinking through courses such as theatre history, stage management seminar, and production practicum.

Students can combine the degree with a minor in another subject area (examples include Event Management or Business Administration) to enhance individual development for graduate work, entry into the live entertainment industry, teaching, or allied fields. 

BEFORE GRADUATING STUDENTS MUST

Content

  1. Acquire technical skills requisite for individual and collaborative artistic self-expression.

Critical Thinking

  1. Demonstrate working knowledge of the life-cycle of productions, including but not limited to pre-production, rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and performances.
  2. Synthesize knowledge from multiple production competencies, including but not limited to direction, performance, design, technology, critical analysis, historical and cultural perspectives, communication, and knowledges outside of live entertainment in support of effective problem solving.

  3. Demonstrate leadership, time management, organizational, and artistic responsibilities of a stage manager and deck stage manager during each phase of production.

Communication

  1. Communicate effectively through written and oral form in artistic, technical, and cultural contexts.

  2. Develop and present a portfolio of production related work with an emphasis in stage management for theatre and dance projects.
