The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certificate is for students who want to teach English as a second language to adults, overseas or in the US.

About this Program

Certificates must contain at least nine credits of coursework that are unique to that program out of all other certificates and minors.

Department Information

The Linguistics Department offers the PhD, MA (both thesis and non-thesis), BA, and two undergraduate minors (the Linguistics minor and the TESL minor). A TESL certificate is offered at the undergraduate level.

The certificate is open to students in any undergraduate program.

Students may earn either the TESL certificate or minor but not both.

Linguistics majors may count LIN 3010 and LIN 4721 toward both the major in linguistics and the TESL certificate.

Prerequisite: completion of at least four of the courses above. Fifth course must be taken simultaneously with TSL 4940.
