IDS 1054 Introduction to Research in the Liberal Arts and Sciences 1 Credit

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Helps Liberal Arts and Sciences students find research opportunities and acquire skills. Topics include formulating research questions, drafting project proposals, cultivating professional relationships with faculty, presenting at conferences, and getting published. Students also engage with the wider research community through tours of special collections and QA sessions with faculty and undergraduate researchers.

Prerequisite: Liberal Arts and Sciences student.

IDS 1161 What is the Good Life 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Examines the enduring question, "What is the Good Life?", from the perspectives of the humanities. Topics include the cost of the good life, how people have chosen to live as members of local and global communities, and conceptions and expressions of beauty, power, love, and health.

Prerequisite: Restricted to undergraduate degree-seeking students.

IDS 2154 Facets of Sustainability 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Introduces theory and practices of sustainability from a variety of topical concerns and academic fields. Investigate challenges of pursuing sustainability via texts, lectures, debate and discussion, and written assignments.

IDS 2338 Democratic Engagement and Public Leadership 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Reflections on the concept of citizenship in the US and internationally. Learn to analyze and to solve public problems and effectively evaluate methods of civic activism. (S)

IDS 3750 Artificial Intelligence in the Social Sciences 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Defines artificial intelligence, big data, and machine learning and discusses the distinctions between these fields. Describes the use of machine learning, search algorithms, text and image analysis, and other AI methodologies to address important social science research questions. Presents artificial intelligence applications to various social sciences disciplines and provides hands on data analysis experience of the use of AI within the social sciences.

Prerequisite: EEL 3872 or permission of the instructor.

IDS 4905 Individual Study 1-7 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Opportunity for more in-depth study; complete a project as part of the planned program. The project must be approved by the dean and carried out under the guidance of a faculty member.

IDS 4906 Interdisciplinary Thesis Research 1-12 Credits

IDS 4930 Special Topics in Interdisciplinary Studies 1-3 Credits

Advanced study of selected topics. Content varies from term to term.

IDS 4940 Internship 0-3 Credits

Grading Scheme: S/U

Supervised internship under guidance of faculty member or delegated authority. Post-internship written report is required.

IDS 4942 Sustainability in Action 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: S/U

Capstone course that integrates readings, discussion and practical experience in a sustainability-related community service, internship or project.

Prerequisite: sustainability studies majors and minors with department approval.

IDS 4956 Overseas Studies 0-16 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Provides a mechanism by which coursework taken as part of an approved study abroad program can be recorded on the UF transcript and counted toward graduation.

Prerequisite: undergraduate advisor permission.

IHS 1100 Intro to Pre-Health Process 1 Credit

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Introduces professional development necessary for application to healthcare professional schools. Engagement in self-assessment while researching requirements and competencies needed to build a professional development plan. Explores diversity in academics, clinical, research, shadowing and community involvement.

IHS 3102 Pre-Health Pathways 2 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Consistent/continual personal and professional growth is the core to preparation for health career professions. Offers pre-health students opportunities for analysis, engagement, and assessment of intrapersonal, interpersonal and critical reasoning preprofessional competencies defined by healthcare professional schools. Creation of professional development plan and professional school ‘application portfolio’ demonstrate knowledge, skills and qualifications needed for competitive applicants.

Prerequisite: Critical Tracking Semester 3

IHS 3935 Human Dimensions in Healthcare 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Seminar for those pursuing a profession in healthcare. Holistically explore and analyze health-related topics in humanities and social sciences via multimedia, stories, speakers, reading, and discussion to have greater insight, sensitivity, and understanding in human dimensions and individual worldviews related to health.

Prerequisite: Sophomore level or higher.

IHS 4125 PHPB Healthcare Seminar 2 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

With collaboration and mentoring with the instructor, Pre-Health Post-Bac (PHPB) students research and present seminars on a variety of healthcare topics/issues. Using instructor provided resources with additional student identified resources, the students and instructor develop seminar content related to the humanities and social sciences for seminar topics.

Prerequisite: Students active in LAS_PB4 student group. Admission to the Pre-Health Post-Bac (PHPB) program. PHPB students only.

INS 3004 International Studies Perspectives 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Demographics, cultures, governments and histories of major world regions as these relate to major, current, transnational and global issues such as migration, socio-economic development, conflicts and disasters, and environmental issues.

Prerequisite: completion of at least 3 courses approved for the international studies major.

INS 4905 Individual Work in International Studies 0-3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Provides those in the major with a directed opportunity to pursue in depth an area of focus associated with international studies including regional and topical coursework, international study abroad, service-learning projects, and/or internship projects.

Prerequisite: INS 3004.

INS 4911 Undergraduate Research in International Studies 0-3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Provides an opportunity to undertake supervised research. Self-directed research allows individuals or groups to explore interesting issues in international studies and communicate their results.

INS 4930 Senior Research Seminar in International Studies 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Readings on and discussions of major contemporary international and global issues. Offers students the opportunity to conduct guided research on international topics of their choice that relate to their track(s) and study, internships or work abroad experiences for the international studies major.

Prerequisite: INS 3004 and senior standing.

ISS 2160 Cultural Diversity in the United States 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

The great racial and ethnic diversity of contemporary US society. Explores both the positive contributions and negative experiences of a variety of racial and ethnic groups, an exploration drawing on such concepts as culture, racial group, ethnic group, prejudice, discrimination, and civil rights protest.

LIT 3362 The Age of the Avant-Garde 3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Examines the revolutionary experimentalist aspects of modern and contemporary culture, such as cubism, surrealism, structuralism, and conceptualism.

SLS 1006 Global Pathways: Prep for Intl 1 Credit

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Prepares students for study abroad and other international experiences. Identifies program and funding opportunities that meet student interests and goals. Cultivates intercultural competencies. Facilitates design of globalized program of study that integrates personal, academic, and professional development. Appropriate for students in Liberal Arts and Sciences who have not studied abroad.

Prerequisite: Undergrad currently enrolled in CLAS degree plan.

SLS 1409 Professional Pathways in the Liberal Arts and Sciences 1 Credit

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

An exploration of career readiness through Liberal Arts and Sciences. Investigation of the world of work and cultivation of professional skills through theory and practice. The disciplinary domains of humanities, social science, natural science, and mathematics will be connected to personal and professional development.

Prerequisite: Student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

SLS 1501 College Study Skills 1 1-3 Credits

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

A developmental course designed to assist students who may be having difficulty in their college-level coursework or those who simply wish to improve basic skills essential for college success. The course begins with an individual self-assessment followed by topics such as motivation, time management, active reading, memory, note taking and test taking. Students will also develop a career portfolio for their final lesson.

SLS 3226 The Art of Adulting 1 Credit

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

Grounding the contemporary concept of “adulting” in the liberal arts and sciences by engaging with mythology, media, and history to examine time management, personal finance, career development, civic participation, and other challenging but crucial elements of contemporary adult life.

Prerequisite: College of Liberal Arts and Science student of sophomore status or higher.

SLS 3342 Strategic Self-Marketing 1 Credit

Grading Scheme: Letter Grade

This course assists students in the process of becoming a more confident and competitive professional. Students will learn about influencing and motivating others, identifying successful leadership and management strategies, understanding the principles of brand identity, and developing situational and cultural awareness in the workplace.

Prerequisite: must be sophomore or junior or senior College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
