EDF 4633 Anti-Black Racism in Education 3 Credits

Engage in the active process of identifying and eliminating racism in educational spaces by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices, and attitudes by using an antiracist approach. Through antiracist readings and strategies, learn to interrogate and dismantle racism, white supremacy, power, and privilege within educational institutions, classrooms, and teaching practices.

Exploring classroom management as it currently exists in schools, developing the skills to work within this system while simultaneously challenging and disrupting common practices that have adversely affected many school children including Black and Brown students, students whose first language is not English, immigrant students, students with ability differences, LGBTQ students, and students who live in poverty.

The application of pedagogical frameworks (Universal Design for Learning and Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Pedagogy) in the implementation and assessment of instruction in the elementary classroom. The purposes of this course are (a) to make connections among concepts in curriculum and instruction, literacy education, and the teaching of reading and writing, (b) to introduce the processes of planning curriculum, lessons, and activities that are aligned with assessment and that are based on strategies that support and challenge diverse learners, and (c) to build understandings of professional and ethical issues that are of concern to English Language Arts teachers.

This course is for students who are interested in learning about informal STEM education, including that practiced at museums, science centers, aquaria, zoos, and parks. The online portion will involve weekly lectures, readings, and discussions. The internship may occur at any approved physical or virtual venue of the student’s choosing.

SMT 4940 Research Internship in STEM Education 3 Credits

This course is designed for advanced undergraduate students who are interested in gaining experience in STEM educational research. The course consists of a seminar and an internship. The seminar will involve weekly readings, learning activities and discussions. The course also includes an internship that is sponsored by a faculty member.
